World Heart Day 2024
World Heart Day (WHD) is a global event on the 29th September aimed at raising awareness around cardiovascular disease. Dr George Comitis, the newly appointed head of cardiology, kicked off WHD celebrations with an interview with the Red Cross Children's Hospital Radio on the 20th of September 2024 - discussing heart disease and giving tips on how to maintain a healthy heart.
WHD commemorations continued on the 30th of September with patients from the cardiac and general outpatients and E1 ward inpatients of Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. The day was filled with hearts - from the heart drawings the patients were invited to colour-in at art stations, to heart-shaped cookies and the beautiful decorations in the E1 ward by Brave Little Hearts.
Health promotion was at the centre of the event, and patients and their families engaged in informative talks around the heart: how it functions, diseases that can affect it, symptoms to look out for and tips to keep it healthy.
We took the opportunity to encourage the parents and guardians to look after their own heart health too, including getting their blood pressure checked! Patients and their families were given information leaflets and activity sheets to take home, along with apples as an extra snack.
Thank you to all the CHDRU members who helped make this event run smoothly.
Ultimately, a successful day promoting heart health! We can’t wait for next year!
