The Division of Cell Biology runs or participates in many training workshops and summer schools.
The Teacher's Workshop
The Teacher's Workshop was developed in 2018 by the lecturers of the Division of Cell Biology with the aim of inspiring teachers from local schools, specifically those from lower income districts that have limited resources for practical lessons. The workshop aims to provide teachers with tools and techniques to achieve learning goals in cost-effective, fun and exciting ways. The sessions include tutorials on using paper microscopes to investigate biological samples on a cellular level, as well suggestions and protocols for performing affordable experiments, such DNA extraction, in the classroom. The workshop is also intended as a platform for the lecturers of the University of Cape Town to gain insight on how the science curriculum is delivered at secondary level, which can inform their own teaching and learning approaches.
