BMedSc(Hons) in Medical Cell Biology - HUB4000W

This is a postgraduate training programme aimed at introducing students to an academic or research career in Cell Biology for academic, research, professional scientific and service careers in biomedical and biotechnology fields. It is a good entry point into a variety of Masters and PhD programmes.

Course entry requirements: A BSc degree or equivalent degree in the biological sciences, preferably with molecular and/or cell biology, biochemistry or genetics as a major subject; or an MBChB degree; or an approved degree in the health and rehabilitation sciences.

Course outline: This specialisation introduces students to a career in academia, research or industry. It consists of: two general modules, four specialisation-specific modules and a research project. The first general module is a six-week laboratory techniques course covering basic laboratory principles and techniques as well as statistics and bioinformatics. The second general module on scientific communication which trains students in scientific writing, comprehension and communication. The following three specialisation specific modules are compulsory for Medical Cell Biology: Advanced Cell Biology; Gene Expression in Development and Disease; and Regenerative Medicine. The fourth specialisationspecific module can be from any of the following honours specialisations: Applied Anatomy/ Biological Anthropology, Bioinformatics, Human/Forensic Genetics, Infectious Diseases and Immunology, Medical Biochemistry, or Physiology. The research project begins in April and ends in October. Projects in Medical Cell Biology include cancer-related research (anti-cancer therapies and transcription factors), developmental biology and stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Students are integrated into research groups and participate in weekly research laboratory meetings, journal clubs and seminars.

MSc and PhD Programmes are by dissertation only and students need to be accepted by a potential supervisor in the Division. The Division of Cell Biology has a very active Postgraduate programme. The students are supervised by senior researchers in the Division and the topics for postgraduate research cover a wide range of fields (see Research). Students participate in a regular programme of seminars and journal clubs. An MSc is typically completed within two years but students may upgrade to a PhD in their second year if good progress in their research project has been made and if their supervisor supports their request. A PhD is typically completed in three or four years.
