The emerging researchers were joined by an international team of experienced mentors from Singapore (Prof Daniel Fung), Germany (Prof Christina Schwenck), France (Prof Bruno Falissard), Netherlands (Prof Maretha de Jonge) and South Africa (Prof Linda Theron). The day was coordinated and led by Dr Eugene L Davids and Dr Liezl Schlebusch, both from the University of Cape Town. The day started with a fun introduction of emerging researchers, followed by short presentations by mentors on career paths, grant writing, technology in research and one-to-one mentoring sessions. All emerging researchers were invited to join a research project on mental health policy in Africa. Prof Petrus de Vries, Chairman of the African Division of the RCPsych said: “Of all the jobs we have working in low-resource countries such as in Africa, building research and clinical capacity in the next generation is probably the most important thing we can do. For that reason, I was delighted that the college was able to provide financial support to make this happen.”
