DiamonD Families Stakeholder Workshops
The study is a multi-year pilot project to adapt, implement, and evaluate the World Health Organisation’s Caregiver Skills Training (WHO-CST) Intervention for families of children with developmental disabilities in South Africa. One of our project goals is to bridge the gap between research and practice by establishing a community-academic partnership with a diverse range of stakeholders. In 2018 we hosted two workshops (one in the North West Province and one in Gauteng). Stakeholders included disability self-advocates, caregivers of children with autism and other developmental disabilities, practitioners, educators, researchers from six South African universities, various community-based organisations and disability non-profit organisations, and representatives from National Department of Social Development and the Department of Basic Education. All provinces, and 11 out of the 13 official languages were represented at the meetings. The workshops were unique opportunities to engage in fruitful discussions and planning activities to co-create a path towards positive change for children with developmental disabilities and their families in South Africa.
