The Cape Heart Institute is thrilled to have Drs Adjine Mastala Fumo and Edna Suzana Lopes Lichucha, both medical researchers at the National Institute of Health (INS), the Division of Non-Communicable Diseases in Mozambique.  They will be at the institute for 3 weeks.

Dr Adjine Mastala Fumo is involved in projects related to cardiovascular diseases, namely the detection and stratification of cardiovascular risk in women of reproductive age and the clinical characterisation of endomyocardial fibrosis and rheumatic heart disease, as well as improving integrated care for hypertension and diabetes. She is a candidate for the Master's in Public Health at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), whose master's proposal involves characterising pre-eclampsia and left ventricular complications using electrocardiography and cardiac echocardiography.  “My aim is to be exposed to the diagnosis and management of heart failure, endomyocardial fibrosis and rheumatic heart disease, as well as attending echocardiography and MRI discussions. I am excited to be in a highly scientific environment at your institution, thus being able to improve my skills in scientific writing with the excellent CHI team,” said Fumo.

Dr Edna Suzana Lopes Lichucha is currently studying for a master's degree in Public Health at Eduardo Mondlane University. Her master's project involves the assessment of a rural area in Maputo Province – “Health Sector Readiness for National Policy Implementation on Hypertension Control”. She also coordinates the implementation of several studies, including clinical trials related to heart disease, cardiovascular disease management and associated risk factors.  During their stay at the institute, they will be supported in clinical and research tasks related to the diagnosis and management of heart failure, cardiomyopathies and rheumatic heart disease. They will also take part in echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging examinations.  “I believe that being in a highly scientific environment like that of this institute and interacting with experienced researchers and supervisors will greatly improve my scientific writing and research skills. It will be a pleasure to learn from the excellent team at CHI,” said Lichucha.
