Cape Heart Institute graduate wins at 2023 Health Excellence Rising Star Awards
A graduate of the Institute, Husnaa Bux, won the second-place prize at the 2023 Health Excellence Rising Star Awards last weekend. The award, by the Health Clinix Group and the South African Clinician Scientists’ Society, recognises emerging leaders in medicine who have distinguished themselves in research. From over 150 nominees including doctors and senior scientists, she was shortlisted in the top three in acknowledgment of her academic potential and research work to date.
Ms Bux, who is currently in her fourth year of an MBChB, was nominated due to her Honours project which she completed at the CHI last year, supervised by Dr Timothy Spracklen and Prof Liesl Zühlke. In this project, she identified disease-causing mutations in previously mutation-negative patients with syndromic forms of congenital heart disease.
