Prof Bernard Gersh visits the Institute

Prof. Bernard Gersh
Professor Bernard Gersh, Professor of Medicine and Consultant in Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) and Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, visited the Cape Heart Institute (CHI) on May 11, 2022.
He presented a special guest lecture at our weekly research meeting, reviewing the epidemiological transition and how socioeconomic factors have changed the nature of CVD over the last two centuries. In his thought-provoking talk, Prof Gersh discussed the impact of socioeconomic status on the incidence and outcomes of CVD in various parts of the world (from China to Cuba), particularly the roles of income, income inequality and employment status on cardiovascular health.

He also addressed the looming CVD epidemic in developing countries and the implications for potential population-based approaches to CVD prevention. His talk will be uploaded to the CHI YouTube channel.
