The Cape Heart Institute bids farewell to Sylvia Dennis

Sylvia retired this year after working at the institute, in its various incarnations, for 26 years – first as secretary to Prof. Lionel Opie, then as Prof. Karen Sliwa’s administrative assistant, and more recently in administrative support and proofreading. Her history in the building goes even further back, starting at Anaesthetics in 1984.

Above: Sylvia has had a remarkable impact on many students, as evidenced by the number of theses and articles in which she has been acknowledged.
CHI celebrated her retirement by hosting a quiz about the institute and her time here, during which she has had a remarkable impact on many young researchers and PhD students. Sylvia’s formidable organisational skills were perhaps best felt in the Cardiac Disease in Maternity symposiums, the inaugural session of which was in 2015. We remember Sylvia’s time at the institute with immense fondness and wish her all the best for the future. We do not doubt at all that we will continue to see her around!
