Professor Karen Sliwa, Director of the Cape Heart Institute (CHI), recently visited her long-time collaborator Professor Ana Mocumbi, Director of the Mozambican Institute for Health Education and Research (MIHER).

Her collaboration with the Director of MIHER, Professor Ana Mocumbi, goes back more than a decade and has been formalized by a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Cape Town and MIHER. This important regional partnership aims to build capacity for the design and implementation of research for chronic cardiovascular disease. The CHI and MIHER work on several collaborative research projects and initiatives through which they link the Departments of the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and the Division of Non-communicable Diseases at the National Health Institute (Mozambique), with the CHI.

During her visit to Maputo, she met with young researchers at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, who she jointly monitors with Prof Mocumbi to define their developmental plans. In addition, she delivered a keynote lecture at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane on Cardiovascular Health and COVID to a larger audience of basic scientists, clinicians and public health specialists.
