Dr Raisa Wessels

Pathologist - Anatomical Pathology

Dr Raisa Wessels is a Lecturer in the Division of Anatomical Pathology at the University of Cape Town and a specialist pathologist with the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), based at Groote Schuur Hospital. Her clinical and academic work centres on diagnostic surgical pathology and cytopathology. 

In 2024, she completed her MMed research on the histological outcomes of atypical squamous cells cannot exclude high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (ASC-H) Papanicolaou smears diagnosed at Groote Schuur Hospital, contributing to improved understanding of this important cervical cytology category and its clinical implications. Dr Wessels is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, and is committed to developing the next generation of clinicians and pathologists. 

She also leads key multidisciplinary meetings at Groote Schuur Hospital, including the Hepatobiliary, Neuroendocrine and Urology MDTs, supporting integrated, evidence-informed decision-making for complex patient cases.
