Ms Nonhlanhla Mtolo

Nonhlanhla has been a children’s nurse specialist for 20 years. Fourteen of these were spent in Gauteng at a tertiary level provincial hospital in paediatric and neonatal units. Keen to strengthen her academic and clinical acumen she enrolled in the first professional masters in children’s nursing at University of Cape Town, and graduated in 2017. In this time she worked on the development of an evidence-based practice guideline for tracheostomised and home ventilated children.
Nonhlanhla is passionate about women and mother empowerment and after graduating she worked as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in a home-based ventilation programme. Here her commitment to engaging women mothers, other caregivers and home-based nurses, facilitated the care of these technology dependent children in a home environment in supportive and practical ways.
She now hails from the Zulu Kingdom where she managed and led paediatric surgical unit. Nonhlanhla is passionate about ethics and professionalism, core values of children’s nursing. This passion and her desire to learn and improve care and nursing practice are the foundations to transitioning into this academic role.
