Nonhlanhla Mtolo
MNur (Child Nur), Bcur (Nurs Educ,Admin), Paed Dip, RN
Nonhlanhla is a Lecturer at the CNDU, and draws on more than 20 years of experience as a specialist children’s nurse. Her career began in Gauteng, where she spent 14 years in paediatric and neonatal units at a tertiary-level provincial hospital. Keen to strengthen her academic and clinical expertise, she joined the first UCT cohort of the clinical Master of Nursing in Child Nursing, graduating in 2017. Her research focused on developing an evidence-based practice guideline for tracheostomised and home-ventilated children.
After completing her master’s, Nonhlanhla worked as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in a home-based ventilation programme, where she championed the empowerment of women, mothers and caregivers to provide safe and supportive care for technology-dependent children.
She later managed and led a paediatric surgical unit in KwaZulu Natal, where her dedication to ethical practice and professionalism - core values of children’s nursing - continued to guide her work. Her commitment to learning, improvement and excellence in care underpins her transition into this academic role at CNDU. Nonhlanhla also represents South African neonatal nurses on the African Neonatal Nurses Society, a Council of International Neonatal Nurses affiliate.
