Human African Molecular PLacental REsearch PlaTform (HAMLET)
About
HAMLET is a research group focused on deciphering the molecular aspects underpinning placenta-mediated disorders as well as the capacity development of reproductive scientists from clinical and basic science backgrounds. Through understanding basic pathophysiology of placenta-mediated disorders, HAMLET aims to improve maternal and perinatal outcomes on the African continent and beyond.
Our research focus
Placenta-mediated disorders (PMDs), including preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, recurrent pregnancy loss, and preterm delivery are the leading causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in Africa and most low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). HAMLET’s objective is to contribute new knowledge to the mechanistic comprehension of PMDs , with the possibility of unravelling, novel screening tools and tangible therapeutic targets that improve the prophylaxis, treatment, and management of PMDs, and ultimately the lives of mothers and babies.
Through strengthening the science and scientific collaboration, we further aim to capacitate the next generation of placental and reproductive scientists from clinical and basic sciences for the country, continent and globally.
Vision
Towards a better understanding of placental science with the aim of improving maternal and perinatal health.
Mission
To contribute towards a mechanistic understanding of placental biology and utilization of placental biomarkers to improve outcomes associated with placenta mediated disorders, assisted reproductive technology as well as short and long-term maternal and child health.
Funders
Research was supported by the South African Medical Research Council with funds received from the Department of Science and Innovation
