HAMLET aims to support scientists engaged in cutting-edge research. We intend utilising novel and multifaceted approaches to examine how placental function links to key maternal and perinatal indicators in women with placental mediated disease.

Further, HAMLET aims to forge a transdisciplinary intra-African network by training African basic science and clinical postgraduate students supported by experts in South Africa, Kenya, UK and USA. This will be achieved by hosting exchange students from partner countries to train them on specific skills, but also by enabling the training of students from South Africa to partner lower and middle-income countries (LMIC) and High-Income Countries (HIC, fostering capacity building, knowledge transfer and implementation of skills learnt at the Research Hub at the University of Cape Town.

HAMLET further aims to broaden and strengthen Africa’s science base; we therefore aim to facilitate placental science workshops where we will promote dialogue addressing the challenges of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to maternal and child health.

Ultimately, we hope to implement a hub that supports innovative and transformative placental research, in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages, as our findings will contribute to a better understanding of factors that affect maternal and infant health.
