Dr Mary Kinney

Senior Lecturer

Mary Kinney is a Senior Lecturer with the Global Surgery Division at the University of Cape Town. She is a well-known advocate and researcher for women’s and children’s health globally with over 20 years of working in the African region. She has a PhD in Public Health from the University of the Western Cape Health and a Masters in International Relations from the University of Cape Town. She is an Editor at the BMC Reproductive Health and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and policy reports, including Every Newborn Action Plan, The Lancet Ending preventable stillbirth series, The Lancet Every Newborn series, and Born Too Soon: The Global Action Report for Preterm Births. She serves on several global and national technical working and oversight groups, including AlignMNH Steering Committee, the International Stillbirth Alliance, the MPDSR Technical Working Group, and the Countdown to 2030 Health Policy and Systems group. Dr Kinney is passionate about using data for action and ensuring respectful care across the continuum for maternal, newborn and child health, including family-centred care for preterms and sick babies and bereavement care after a stillbirth.
