Mr Waheed Amanjee

MSc Candidate - Genomics and Bioinformatics

Waheed’s research investigates genome-wide methylation block patterns and biological ageing in variant-negative early-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) using PacBio HiFi long-read sequencing. By analysing contiguous methylation domains rather than single CpG sites, his work aims to identify large-effect epigenetic signatures that may inform diagnosis and risk modelling in African populations. His broader interests include rare diseases, genomic equity, and translational neurogenetics. Waheed also serves as COO of the African Research Society and is a 2025 Mandela Rhodes Scholar, committed to advancing ethical and inclusive genomic research across Africa.
