Our Vision

At the COIN Unit, we envision a future where every African patient has access to precision medicine and care that is informed by their unique genetic makeup and lived context. By harnessing genomics and data-driven insights, we aim to make diagnosis not only faster and more accurate but also more equitable. Our work seeks to uncover the genetic foundations of rare and neurological diseases, laying the groundwork for targeted therapies designed with African diversity in mind. Through collaboration, innovation and capacity building, COIN strives to ensure that the benefits of genomic medicine are accessible to all, not just a few, transforming health for Africa and contributing knowledge to the world.

Our Mission

The COIN Unit's mission is to integrate genomics into clinical care in Africa, ensuring that patients benefit directly from scientific discovery. We bring together experts in clinical medicine, genomics, bioinformatics and genetic counselling to translate data into diagnosis and research into impact. Through this multidisciplinary approach, we aim to build the infrastructure, expertise and evidence needed to make genomics a routine part of healthcare across the continent. Our mission is rooted in collaboration, capacity building and a shared commitment to improving lives through science.

Our Approach to Genomics

Key to achieving our mission is African leadership, capacity building and representation through empowering local scientists and clinicians to lead research that reflects the continent's diversity and needs. By combining clinical insight, genomic discovery, bioinformatics innovation and genetic counselling expertise, we work to close the health equity gap and ensure that precision medicine is built for Africa, by Africa. Our approach is grounded in collaboration and data sharing, for Africa and with the world, creating a foundation where knowledge moves freely, discoveries are translated into care, and every genome tells a story that fuels our mission.
