The Institute attends the inaugural Multi Institute Symposium
The Cape Heart Institute (CHI) attended the first-ever Multi-Instiute Symposium at the Faculty of Health Sciences, hosted by the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine (IDM) on May 7, 2025. The event was designed to bring together all four of the faculty’s institutes – the IDM, CHI, Lung Institute and Neuroscience Institute.
The event aimed at promoting inter-institutional collaboration, innovation, and networking. It featured Cafe-style discussions with Senior researchers, TED Talk-format sessions and panel discussions on inflammation research, a showcase of cutting-edge technology platforms and the Harmonising Collaboration Mixer featuring music from various institutes.
Under the overarching symposium theme of inflammation, CHI Director Prof Karen Sliwa gave a lecture on the cardiovascular implications of pollution. Prof Sandrine Lecour, CHI Deputy Director, gave an overview of the CHI’s vision and research activities. These TED-style talks by representatives from each institute were followed by panel discussions on areas of mutual interest and avenues for inter-institute collaboration and cooperation going forward.
Drs Carmelita Abrahams and Olukayode Aremu represented the CHI at a booth with students Yandiswa Mabhude and Thato Mdi, showcasing our LOPI imaging facility as well as the CHI’s new zebrafish laboratory. Dr Timothy Spracklen and Taariq Salie presented in the “Rising Stars” event, armed only with a whiteboard and a rotating audience.
The day ended with an inspirational talk by UCT’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Mosa Moshabela, followed by a rousing performance by the CHI choir. Special thanks to the IDM for hosting this event – the first of its kind – and we look forward to next year’s Multi-Institute Symposium!
