José Miguel Calderín

PhD Student 

Jose M. Calderin is a PhD student in Pharmacometrics who joined the group in February 2023.

His research focuses on the application of nonlinear mixed-effects modeling to describe the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anti-tuberculosis drugs used in the treatment of pulmonary and meningeal tuberculosis, integrating both preclinical and clinical data. Jose holds a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Havana, Cuba. His interest in dose optimization through PK/PD modeling began during his undergraduate studies, where he worked on the pharmacokinetics of monoclonal antibodies.

Research Projects:

Jose is currently involved in several projects, including:

  • Population pharmacokinetics of pyrazinamide, isoniazid, and dexamethasone in adults with HIV-associated tuberculosis meningitis.
  • Drug penetration into central nervous system tissues (CSF, brain, spinal cord) of pyrazinamide, isoniazid, linezolid, rifampicin, rifabutin, and bedaquiline in a preclinical rabbit model of tuberculosis meningitis.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid penetration of pyrazinamide, levofloxacin, linezolid, cycloserine, and clofazimine in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.
  • Semi-mechanistic joint parent–metabolite modeling of the novel anti-TB drug TBAJ-876 and its metabolite M3 in healthy volunteers (in collaboration with TB Alliance).
