BMedScHons in Biokinetics

Graduates with a degree in Human Movement Studies or Physical Education are eligible for this course. The aim of the course is to improve the knowledge of the exercise sciences and to combine this with some specific clinical experience in the management of rehabilitation. This course is followed by a one-year internship and subsequent registration with the Board of Physiotherapy, Biokinetics and Podiatry of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

BMedScHons in Exercise Science

This course is for graduates with a BSc degree who have at least one undergraduate course in physiology, biochemistry or another biological science. The aim of this course is to equip students with the basic knowledge and techniques for a career in exercise science or physiology research and teaching.

MPhil in Biokinetics

Graduates with a 4-Year Biokinetics Professional degree OR Honours Degree with completed Biokinetics Internship are eligible to apply for this programme.  The Division’s MPhil (Biokinetics) degree is among the first such qualifications offered in South Africa. A structured master’s programme with research will provide an opportunity for important clinical continuing education for the biokineticist, as well as creating a platform for conducting clinically relevant research to add to the growing body of evidence-based practice.

MPhil in Sport and Exercise Medicine

Graduates with a MBChB or equivalent degree are eligible for this course. The MPhil is a part-time degree that runs over a period of 3 years and consists of course work, clinical examinations and a research project. The course work includes basic information on the exercise sciences, with substantial emphasis on applied information on the clinical aspects of sports medicine, including the management of sports injuries and specific medical problems arising in sport and exercise.

MSc in Exercise and Sports Physiotherapy (offered by the Department of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences)

This course is offered by the Division of Physiotherapy within the Department of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and designed for graduates with a BSc degree in Physiotherapy. The aim of this degree is to enhance the physiotherapist's knowledge of the exercise sciences and to combine this with clinical experience in the management and research of sports-related problems relating to physiotherapy.

Theses master’s and PhD programes are all research based.  Master’s and PhD students are required to submit a dissertation or thesis, respectively, which is examined by external examiners. The requirements and process for applying are slightly different for each discipline.

Selection for all courses is made on the basis of academic merit and identification of a supervisor, who has accepted to supervise the degree. Some consideration is also given to work experience. 

MMedSc and PhD in Dietetics

Graduates with a BSc degree in Dietetics or equivalent and are registered or registerable with the Board of Dietetics and Nutrition of the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a dietitian or dietitian-nutritionist, are eligible for the MMedSci in Dietetics.  Students with an MMedSc or 1 year of full time registration for the  MMedSc in Dietetics are eligible for the PhD degree. These programmes are research based and students are required to submit a dissertation or thesis, which is examined by external reviewers. Depending on students’ prior learning, they may be expected to complete a non-credit bearing postgraduate course in nutrition science and biostatistics

MSc (Med) and PhD in Exercise Science

Students who hold a BMedScHons, MBChB or equivalent degree are eligible for the MSc. However, only those students with an MSc or 1 year of full time registration for an MSc are eligible for the PhD degree. Students are required to submit a thesis, which is examined by external reviewers.

Graduates with a Bachler’s or BSc degree in human or health sciences, including those with a BSc degree in Dietetics or nutrition or equivalent or who hold a MBChB degree, are eligible for the MMedSci in Nutrition.   Students with a completed master’s degree in one of the above mentioned areas or 1 year of full time registration for the  MMedSc in Nutrition are eligible for the PhD degree. These programmes are research based and students are required to submit a dissertation or thesis, which is examined by external reviewers. Depending on students’ prior learning, they may be expected to complete a non-credit bearing postgraduate course in nutrition science and biostatistics.
