Prof Jeannine Heckmann

Professor of Neurology

Prof Heckmann established the Neurology Research Group in 2007 to study African-specific questions in neuromuscular diseases including myasthenia gravis, motor neuron disease (MND)/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and inherited neuromuscular diseases. A major focus is understanding the genetic basis of these disorders in people living in Africa. Prof Heckmann collaborates within the University of Cape Town as well as internationally. She leads the ALS Africa Network that includes the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and the Aga Kahn University in Kenya.
