The Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) of Addis Ababa University’s College of Health Science received funding from the Ethiopian and Dutch government to build and equip a new cardiac centre. Philips was given the responsibility to develop the project which includes 480 weeks of training for cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons as well as anaesthetists.

The University of Cape Town was approached and eventually chosen as the training partner based on its reputation and experience in these fields. The responsibility and execution of the program was given to members of the Cape Heart Institute (CHI). An extensive training program across the different disciplines was developed which includes on-site modules in both facilities. The aim is to enable the new cardiac centre to serve its patients to the best of its own abilities.
