The Biomechanics and Human Movement Group brings innovative technology and internationally-recognized expertise to the study and rehabilitation of movement-limiting conditions and performance including spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, knee arthroscopy. Additionally, we investigate the impact of assistive technology on human movement including prosthetics and robotic exoskeleton. Our research broadens to explore human movement strategies to help reduce injury risk and improve human performance, spanning from cycling, cricket bowling and throwing biomechanics, rugby tackling, water polo and running gait.
Our biomechanics lab is one of Africa’s advanced research labs in developing ground-breaking biomechanics technology for patient rehabilitation and high performance. We are actively involved in the validation of new technology for the measurement of biomechanics of human movement, our purpose is to advance low-cost innovation devices (equipment). The lab houses state-of-the-art electromyography (including high-density EMG) to monitor neuromuscular changes over time. This allows for a deeper understanding of muscle activation patterns and evaluating neuroplasticity.
