The Community Eye Health Institute is involved in several initiatives that seek to overcome the challenges faced by prevention of blindness programmes in developing countries. These include:

  1. Consultancy and support of provincial eye care plans in South Africa
  2. Situational analysis and costing projections of national plans
  3. Participation in the development and planning of urban Vision 2020 Centres
  4. Registration and deployment of ophthalmic mid level workers
  5. Establishment of a region-wide Advocacy support network (ASN)
  6. Promotion and training of District Vision 2020 Committees
