Some of the participants of the Management Essentials for Success in Vision 2020 Programmes short course, together with Prof Colin Cook, Head of Ophthalmology, and Mr Martin Hahn, Regional Director of CBM, during the presentation ceremony of the 2013 course.
In 2009, the University of Cape Town’s Community Eye Health Institute (CEHI) and CBM International initiated a funding arrangement to strengthen the capacity of Vision 2020 in sub-Saharan Africa. This partnership was instrumental in the development and delivery of a one year eye care programme management course, the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Eye Health, which has yielded 33 graduates to date.
In addition, almost 100 eye care programme practitioners completed the Certificate course in Community Eye Health, a 10-week training programme. Both these programmes are aimed at building management capacity in eye care programmes in sub-Saharan Africa.
In 2013, CEHI and CBM collaborated to run the first “Management Essentials for Success in Vision 2020” (MES) short course in Cape Town, South Africa. The MES course is aimed at providing training, coaching and mentoring to eye care programme staff responsible for key management functions that are critical for success in eye care service delivery, human resource management and infrastructural development. This 5-day intense workshop-like course was delivered to a combination of the 2013 class of the PgDCEH and senior eye care programme staff in need of refresher training of core knowledge and skills required for eye care programme management.
The course covered a number of core management topics, presented in mini-workshop format. Faculty used various teaching methodologies to do revision of key management principles and their application in case study analysis, and problem solving methodologies for learning enhancement. The topics included Vision 2020, Planning for success, Strategic planning, Finance and budgeting, Monitoring and evaluation, Human resource management and Communication and reporting (see attached schedule). This will be offered on an annual basis and is extremely useful for revision of some concepts and practices learned during management training.
