What is the aim of the programme?
The aim of the MPH(CEH) is to enable participants to undertake appropriate clinical and operational research that might inform the planning and management of eye care programmes. It does NOT provide a clinical training in ophthalmology.
Who is the programme intended for?
The MPH(CEH) is intended for people working in prevention of blindness programmes in sub-Saharan Africa. These may include national eye care coordinators, district eye care programme managers, and clinical professionals with interest in community eye health research.
What are the entry requirements for the programme?
The minimum requirements of the programme include an undergraduate four-year degree in health sciences, social sciences, or business management, or an equivalent university qualification. Recognition of prior learning is also considered, in line with the University of Cape Town’s policies. Proficiency in English and mathematics, as well as basic computer literacy is essential. At least two years’ experience working in community eye health is also required.
What is the duration and what are the dates?
18 – 24 months
First semester: Usually from the second week of February to the second week of June
Second semester: Usually from the second week of July to the second week of November.
What is the structure of the programme?
The first 12 months are spent in Cape Town as a fulltime student, when 10 prescribed courses should be completed. During the second 6 – 12 months the research and dissertation should be completed, usually in the student’s work environment. However, students can structure their coursework schedule according to their preference.
How do I apply?
The MPH(CEH) is currently hosting the last cohort of students, and no new enrolments will be accepted.
What alternative programme is available?
From 01 July 2024, a Master of Science (MSc) will become available for postgraduate Community Eye Health studies. Further details to follow.
