Unlocking the potential of the red blood cell transcriptome for anti-doping and more

Dr Shaun Sutehall completed his PhD at the University of Cape Town, where his research explored innovative technologies in distance running — including transcriptomic anti-doping tests and novel carbohydrate delivery systems. Working closely with elite East African athletes, he gained first-hand insights into the science behind record-breaking performances.

Alongside his academic work, Shaun has held leadership roles spanning both sport and healthcare, including Research and Innovation Lead at UK Anti-Doping and Senior Project Manager at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. This mix of operational delivery and scientific expertise gives him a unique perspective on applied physiology research.

Shaun’s current research focuses on red blood cells as a window into human performance and health. Using cutting-edge single-cell RNA sequencing, he aims to uncover how red blood cell gene expression is altered under different physiological and pharmacological conditions. The results could transform the anti-doping landscape, clinical practice, and elite performance support.
