The role of the brain-heart axis in Wellbeing
Join us this Friday 29th of August:
In 1997, while training for the SA Triathlon Champs, Dr Laurie Rauch was knocked off his bicycle by a container truck. He sustained severe traumatic brain injuries; 2 of his neck vertebrae were fractured injuring his spinal cord; 3 of his back vertebrae were fractured and his right leg was amputated above the knee. In the final year of a PhD in Exercise Science at the time, Laurie was forced to change his career outlook at age 30. He went on to walk (and cycle) again, complete his PhD degree, do Postdoctoral research, and become an NRF rated scientist. Laurie’s research explores the neurobiological underpinnings of mastering bodily stress reactivity and performing under pressure, whether it be in the sporting, corporate, artistic, academic, wellbeing arena. Laurie is an adjunct senior lecturer at UCT in the Department of Human Biology in Physiological Sciences, has an NRF C2 rating, an H-Index of 25 on Google Scholar with > 3500 citations. He supervises PhD and Masters students and presents at scientific/community conferences.
Our in-person meeting will be in held in Classroom 1 on level 3 UCT HPALS, SSISA blg, Boundary Rd, Newlands. HPALS members can also join us online using MS Teams
