The polygenic influence of genetic variants on ACL rupture risk across multiple international cohorts

Professor Alison V. September is a Geneticist and Professor of Physiological Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT). She co-leads the GenOmics of Soft Tissue INjuries (GOINg) consortium and is Deputy Director of the UCT Health through Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Sport (HPALS) research centre, ranked among the top 25 globally in sports science. Her research focuses on the genomics of musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries, including Achilles tendinopathy, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture injuries, concussion, and shoulder injury in breast cancer survivors. 

She pioneered the use of whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing in this field and led the development of the first biomedical knowledge graph for tendon and ligament injuries. She has published over 97 papers, supervised more than 50 postgraduate students. 

 Professor September holds honorary professorships in Scotland and fellowships with the Academy of Science of South Africa, the European College of Sport Science, and the National Academy of Kinesiology (USA), where she is the only current African Fellow.
