"From peak performance to illness: Exploring the physiological state spectrum and its implication for NCD prevention, control, and rehabilitation"
Dr. Fredirick Lazaro Mashili (MD, PhD) is currently an associate professor of exercise physiology, physical activity, and metabolism in the department of human biology, division of physiological sciences, University of Cape Town. For over a decade, his research has explored the physiological state spectrum, examining physiological and pathophysiological changes as the body transitions from peak fitness to illness and how exercise can reverse those changes. Along with translating these insights into public health strategies for NCD prevention and control, Dr. Mashili’s work has informed both local, regional and global disease prevention guidelines.
He has led pioneering research in lifestyle medicine while translating findings into public health policy and clinical practice. Dr Mashili has played a key role in advancing physical activity and nutrition policies in Tanzania hence bridging academia with public health implementation.
He is a member of the WHO Trans Fat Acid elimination Technical Advisory Group (TFATAG) and a Bernard Lown visiting scholar at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. With a career spanning research, policy, and capacity building, his work continues to shape the future of preventive, curative and rehabilitative health strategies.
In this talk, Dr. Mashili will share insights from his research, discuss key methodologies, and outline his vision for advancing translational research and public health interventions at UCT and beyond.
Our in-person meeting will be in held in Classroom 1 on level 3 UCT HPALS, SSISA blg, Boundary Rd, Newlands.
