Jessica Opie, is an Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Haematology, in the Department of Pathology, at the National Health Laboratory Service, Groote Schuur Hospital, and the University of Cape Town. She is a medical doctor and specialist in Haematology Pathology with background experience and training in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology in the United Kingdom, and Haematology training in Australia with Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. She has extensive experience in diagnostic haematology and is a passionate teacher, and mentor. She has successfully supervised seven Master of Medicine (Haem) research projects, all published in peer review journals, and has broad research interests spanning lymphoma, other haematological complications of HIV, haemostasis and thrombosis, and iron deficiency diagnostics. She has published more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals, most international, and serves as an international journal reviewer. She chairs the Pathology Postgraduate Committee at UCT, and is an examiner, convener, and moderator for specialist examinations of the College of Medicine of South Africa. She is honoured to have been elected to the Board of the International Society of Laboratory Haematology (ISLH) and serves on their Educational Sub-Committee. She has delivered lectures and organised international haematology congresses. She strives to lead and enable her dynamic and dedicated team of pathologists, registrars and scientists to deliver a high-quality diagnostic service and perform clinically relevant research, whilst simultaneously teaching and training to a high standard.
