Medical School Laboratory

It provides the foundation teaching and training in basic biochemical sciences and computational biology to undergraduate students in the Faculty, and will build capacity in scarce skills in South Africa including bioinformatics and large data analysis, as well as in integrative and multidisciplinary molecular sciences. It has current strengths both in undergraduate teaching, as well post-graduate training and research; and a strong National and African footprint in capacity development, education and service.

Professor Iqbal Parker

Congratulations to Professor Iqbal Parker in the Division of Medical Biochemistry and Structural Biology on his election as Vice President of the African Academy of Science (AAS) for Southern Africa. The AAS is a non-aligned, non-political, not-for-profit pan African organisation whose vision is to see transformed lives on the African continent through science. The Academy’s mandate is recognising excellence through the AAS’ highly prestigious fellowship and award schemes, providing advisory and think tank functions for shaping Africa’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) strategies and policies and implementing key STI programmes addressing Africa’s developmental challenges.

Georgia Schäfer

Congratulations to Georgia Schäfer on her EDCTP Senior Research Fellowship, awarded for work on the characterisation of KSHV-driven pathologies and disease outcome in HIV-infected patients.
