Dr Aubrey Kümm a veterinarian by profession with a keen interest in neurodevelopment, recently pursued a master’s degree at the Centre for Autism Research in Africa (CARA), University of Cape Town. He recently presented preliminary findings from his master’s study at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) in San Francisco, California in May 2017. His work examined the feasibility of a smartphone application to identify young children at risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder in a low-income community setting in South Africa. Dr Kümm’s contribution to the field of autism research, led to him being bestowed the Cultural Diversity Poster Award at the IMFAR. The award is extremely prestigious, and recognises contributions to the field of autism research that is cutting-edge and innovative that addresses issues of racial, ethnic, cultural or socioeconomic diversity in autism, with the potential to contribute to communities that traditionally are underserved.
