CHI fully represented at the 2023 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress
From 25 to 28 August, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2023 took place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The world's largest cardiovascular congress was attended by approximately 25,000 cardiovascular professionals on-site and many more joined online.
Professor Karen Sliwa, Director of the UCT Cape Heart Insititute (CHI) and Co-Chair of the EORP PeriPartum CardioMyopathy (PPCM) Registry, presented novel research findings on peripartum cardiomyopathy at a Late Breaking Trial session and as a talk on ESC TV and discussed the heart failure challenges in Africa in a joint session with JAMA Cardiology.
Newly inaugurated fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), Dr. Viljoen presented on the phenotypic differences between peripartum cardiomyopathy and idiopathic or familial cardiomyopathy, and on the global perspectives and the proteomic profile of peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM). CHI's Professor Gasnat Shaboodien presented on single nucleotide polymorphisms and their association with QTc and left ventricular function in peripartum cardiomyopathy.
Third-year CHI PhD student Julian Hoevelmann presented in the session on "Sex differences in heart disease: epidemiology“ with a talk entitled "Adherence to heart failure therapy influences LV recovery in women with PPCM”.
