Andisiwe Malo graduates with MSc (Med)
Thesis Title: The multiplex determination of the free fraction of the first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs ethambutol, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, rifampicin, and the major metabolites acetyl isoniazid and desacetyl rifampicin in human plasma using ultracentrifugation.
In 2018, Andisiwe Malo completed her Honours degree within the Division of Clinical Pharmacology. With determination as her compass, Andisiwe delved into her MSc (Med) degree in Clinical Pharmacology with unwavering focus and dedication. Andisiwe’s thesis focuses on the multiplex determination of the free fraction of the first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs ethambutol, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, rifampicin, and the major metabolites acetyl isoniazid and desacetyl rifampicin in human plasma using ultracentrifugation. This MSc research project aimed to unravel the complexities of drug-protein binding, shedding light on the nuanced behaviour of anti-tuberculosis drugs in human plasma. Through meticulous research, Andisiwe challenged the assumption that drugs with similar characteristics behave uniformly. Instead, her findings highlighted the importance of approaching each drug as a distinct entity, with its own unique interactions and implications for clinical practice.
By highlighting the intricacies of drug-protein binding, Andisiwe paved the way for a deeper understanding of pharmacokinetics and drug efficacy, ultimately influencing clinical decision-making and patient care. When asked about her advice for aspiring researchers in the Health Science community, Andisiwe offers words of wisdom forged through her own journey "In the pursuit of research, dedication and perseverance are important, as the journey is filled with obstacles and triumphs alike. However, it is within the collective strength of a supportive community where the true essence and impact of research are magnified”.
Andisiwe's journey from Honours student to Senior Scientific Officer within the Division of Clinical Pharmacology serves as an inspiration to all who aspire to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in Health Sciences. With dedication, perseverance, innovation, and a supportive community by your side, the possibilities for transformative discoveries are boundless.
