The Student Health And Wellness Centres Organisation (SHAWCO) from the University of Cape Town in partnership with the Clinical Skills and Obstetrics and Gyneacology Department of UCT/Groote Schuur Hospital recently presented a workshop focusing on skills needed by medical students for this trip.

SHAWCO runs an annual trip to rural areas in South Africa to aid and support in the call to primary health care for all, whilst exposing medical students to the challenges and joys of rural medical practice.

Two groups of 20 medical medical and OT students will visit Zithulele in the Eastern Cape and the Eden District in the Western Cape. These trips will provide vital health services like screening for common diseases like hypertension, diabetes, HIV, TB and cervical cancer, which are often not detected due to very few resources in rural areas.
