Project title: Advancing Spinal Cord Injury Self-Management in South Africa Through Telerehabilitation

Brief abstract: Spinal cord injury is a significant public health issue, with South African incidence rates far exceeding the global incidence rate. Although, management of SCI in South Africa has improve enormously, there are still a limited number of facilities that can provide comprehensive care to patients with SCI. A large discrepancy exists between the private and public healthcare sectors, with very few acute care and rehabilitation facilities available within the public sector. There is huge need to bridge this gap and provide patients with the necessary self-care skills to prevent the development of secondary complications and reduce reliance on the overburdened South African healthcare system. This could be achieved through the potential solutions of self-management programmes and telerehabilitation.

Fun fact: I’ve been riding horses since I was 5 years old, and was a professional ballet dancer once upon a time…
