Just out: Modifying HIV envelope proteins alters mechanical properties of virus‑like particles
PhD work by Dr Elizabeth Kruse shows that modifying HIV envelope proteins can significantly alter the mechanical properties of virus‑like particles (VLPs).
Using atomic force microscopy and finite‑element modelling, we compared HIV VLPs with identical Gag protein shells but different envelope designs. VLPs incorporating influenza HA₂ sequences were markedly stiffer and mechanically stronger than conventional gp150‑based particles.
Why does this matter?
Viral mechanics influence stability, cell entry, and performance as vaccines or delivery platforms. These results suggest that mechanical tuning of VLPs, alongside immunological design, could become a valuable lever in next‑generation vaccine development.
