Dr Scott Timcke
Scott Timcke is a political economist specialising in AI, algorithmic capitalism, and democratic development, with affiliations at the University of Johannesburg and international research centres. His work examines how digital technologies reshape political life, with particular attention to race, class, and power in contemporary societies.
During his EthicsLab residency, Timcke is developing chapters of his book manuscript AI and Democracy, focusing on how algorithmic systems reshape the lived quality and material conditions of democratic life, while contributing to a broader research agenda that draws on African intellectual history and political economy to inform contemporary debates in AI ethics. The residency supports sustained writing and collaborative engagement, while contributing to the intellectual life of the EthicsLab through seminars, workshops, and ongoing scholarly exchange.
