MMed EM Convenor: Emergency Medicine

Medical education; assessment; curriculum development; emergency medicine training; institutional and educational transformation.

My research focuses on three interconnected areas within health sciences education. The first is curriculum development and renewal, examining how training programmes can be designed and adapted to meet the needs of diverse learners and healthcare contexts, including work on Cuban-trained medical students transitioning into South African settings. The second is assessment in medical education, particularly the shift from traditional examination-based approaches toward programmatic assessment and workplace-based methods that authentically evaluate clinical competence. My PhD investigates implementation of these assessment reforms across South African emergency medicine programmes. The third is transformation in health professions education, exploring how curricula, assessment practices, and educational structures can be reshaped to produce practitioners equipped for African healthcare realities. This includes attention to equity, contextual relevance, and the development of training approaches responsive to local disease burdens and resource environments.
