Zaheer Isaacs

Laboratory Manager

Zaheer Isaacs completed his BSc degree (Microbiology and Biochemistry) in 1999 followed by a BSc (Honours) degree in 2000 at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) - Thesis title: Determining the Survival and Prevalence of Salmonella, Campylobacter and Listeria within the Poultry Abattoir. He then started working at PathCare, a private pathology laboratory, in 2001. In 2003 he was appointed as their Molecular (PCR) Laboratory Manager, a position he held for the next seven years. Assays performed covered viral, bacterial and genetic testing.

During this time Zaheer completed various management courses, including the Management Development Program course at University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB). He managed to complete his assessors training and is a qualified SANAS Medical Technical Assessor (based on ISO 15189/17025). Furthermore, he assists the Research and Development Manager with setting up of new assays and implementing these new assays into the Laboratory as part of the routine testing.

Zaheer then decided in 2010 that a change was required and started working at the NHLS as the Virology Laboratory Manager in Groote Schuur Hospital. Here he feels he will be able once again further his knowledge (in both management and academia) as it is affiliated with a world renowned academic institution, viz. UCT.
