Associate Professor Marvin Hsiao
Nei-yuan (Marvin) Hsiao is an associate professor and consultant virologist at University of Cape Town/Groote Schuur Complex of the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS).
In addition to being a lecturer of several undergraduate and postgraduate courses in MBChB and BSc, Marvin is responsible for the division's registrar and intern medical scientist training. He had been a College of Medicine South Africa (CMSA) examiner for Medical Virology since 2015 and serves as a reviewer for HPCSA intern medical scientist portfolios. He is also a member of the NHLS virology expert committee and consults on a variety of issues regarding provision of virology diagnostic service and training.
In addition to his virology training, Marvin holds a master’s degree in public health. He is passionate about topics related to epidemiology in viral diseases and health systems issue related to laboratory medicine. His research focus is around viral diagnostics and disease surveillance. He is an active member of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) COVID-19 variant consortium and leads the diagnostic subgroup of the consortium. He received research funding form Poliomyelitis Research Foundation (PRF), SAMRC, NHLS Research Trust and Wellcome Trust. He is currently a member of the PRF scientific advisory panel.
