Heidi Smuts (Ph.D) graduated from Rhodes University with a B.Sc in Microbiology and Zoology in 1977, a B.Sc (Hons) in Microbiology from Stellenbosch University in 1978 and a Ph.D in Virology in 1986 from University of Cape Town. She is a senior medical scientist with an interest in molecular diagnostics of viral infections including respiratory viruses, hepatitis viruses and identification of novel viruses using sequence independent amplification techniques. She has published >30 papers.
