Dr Gerald Chege was a Research Officer at University of Cape Town (UCT) and an Affiliate Research Scientist at the Institute of Primate Research (IPR), Nairobi, Kenya.

Gerald received his basic and tertiary education in Kenya where he obtained his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Science degrees from the University of Nairobi. He worked at the IPR for 9 years before completing his PhD in the Department of Medical Virology (now a Division of the Department of Pathology) at UCT. His PhD research involved preclinical assessment of candidate HIV-1 vaccines using the Chacma baboons as part of a larger project, led by Prof Anna-Lise Williamson, to develop HIV vaccines at the Division of Medical Virology.

Gerald has a strong interest in primate immunology and ethical use of nonhuman primates as models in medical and vaccine research. He was a member of the Faculty of Health Sciences Animal Research and Ethics Committee. He enjoys reading about the history and wildlife of southern Africa and he is a devoted reader of Wilbur Smith novels.
