Clinical Services
Our vibrant clinical dermatology services span Groote Schuur, Red Cross and UCT Private hospitals, offering comprehensive inpatient/outpatient care, community outreach, tele-dermatology, and phototherapy treatments.
Clinical Dermatology is vibrant and busy offering both inpatient and outpatient services at Groote Schuur and Red Cross hospitals.A private inpatient dermatology service is offered by sessional consultants from our team at the UCT Private Academic Hospital which is housed within the New Groote Hospital Building.
We also provide consultation services to surrounding secondary hospitals, primary care clinics and private practitioners as needed. Nurse-lead dermatology clinics are being established with the most functional site at the Mitchell Plain Community Health Centre.
A tele-dermatology patient referral service augments our outreach program www.vulamobile.com
Our Phototherapy and Skin Day Care Unit receives on average 60 patients per week with 400 to 500 patient visits per month.

Groote Schuur Hospital
Groote Schuur Dermatology has both an inpatient service, and an ambulatory service at Groote Schuur Hospital.
We offer the following clinics:
- Adult general dermatology clinics twice a week
- Interdisciplinary skin cancer clinic once a week
- Interdisciplinary drug allergy and infectious disease clinic once every two weeks
- Interdisciplinary skin lymphoma clinic once every three months
- Phototherapy problem clinic once every three months
- Occupational dermatology clinic once a month
- Melanoma clinic once every two months
- Biologics clinic once every month
- We offer daily ward consults to other disciplines
Day care facility for:
- Topical therapy
- Photo therapy
- Advanced wound care.
Electronic referral service via Vula medical referral app to accommodate urgent referral and provide advice to primary care practitioners.
Private inpatients and outpatient dermatology services are provided by our team at UCT Private Academic Hospital.
Red Cross Children's Hospital
Red Cross Children’s Hospital Dermatology offers both inpatient and ambulatory services.
We offer the following clinics:
- Paediatric dermatology clinics twice a week
- Interdisciplinary skin cancer clinic once a week
- Epidermolysis bullosa clinic
- Daily ward consults with other disciplines
Day care facility for:
- Topical therapy
- Advanced wound care.

Mitchell's Plain Community Health Centre
The Mitchell's Plain Community Health Centre outreach is a nurse-led Dermatology clinic with Dermatology registrars visiting every 4th week. A tele-dermatology patient referral service augments our outreach program www.vulamobile.com
Mitchell’s Plain CHC also serves as an outreach clinic for 5th year medical students rotating in dermatology.
