Registrar

This is the substantive training post and competition is tough as our Division only has 5 funded registrar posts and contracts are awarded for 4 years. All registrars at UCT are expected to complete the exams set by the College of Medicine of South Africa and produce a dissertation for the University MMed degree.

Supernumerary Registrars

Although only South African citizens and permanent residents may be appointed to funded registrar posts, we have a number of trainees from other countries funded independently.

Supernumerary Application process

1. The first step in the process is to have your credentials verified by ECFMG, making use of the Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) available on the ECFMG website before applying for a supernumerary (unpaid) position at the University of Cape Town.

  • Kindly visit the ECFMG website to create an EPIC account and upload your credentials (qualifications, academic record/transcripts and medical registration/license) for verification.

2. Second step: please submit the documents indicated below:

  • A letter of motivation in support of your application
  • Curriculum vitae, indicating your medical training and experience after qualifying as a doctor in your own country
  • Proof of having your credentials verified by ECFMG
  • Proof of sponsorship ( if you are going to fund your own studies you must provide us with an affidavit accompanied by proof of having sufficient funds/source of funding to cover the financial costs during training)
  • The exact dates of your proposed visit (taking into account the fact that the whole HPCSA registration process may take between 3 -6 months after ECFMG verification)

On acceptance by the Department you will be assisted with the HPCSA registration, which may take approximately 3 months, after the HPCSA has received all the documents required for registration.

Please note that having your credentials verified does not guarantee acceptance by the Department. Verification of credentials is a mandatory requirement to register with the HPCSA once you have been offered a position by the Department.

Karlstorz EndoUrology Fellowship

We offer a 1 year fellowship with a focus on minimally invasive urology. The fellowship is at the high volume academic centres of Groote Schuur and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals, attached to the University of Cape Town.

The visiting trainee will be exposed to laparoscopic oncology (prostatectomy, partial/radical nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, pyeloplasty, cystectomy and ureteric reconstruction), endourology (ureteroscopy, percutaneous renal surgery (PCNL), extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)), and other minimally invasive procedures (including TURP, TURBT and flexible

nephron-ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy, paediatric laparoscopy-endourology and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy). The trainee will actively participate in all aspects of clinical care such as diagnosing and evaluating patients, performing surgery, on call duty roster and post-operative care.

The fellow will have the opportunity to use the purpose built Karl Storz equipped Surgical Skills Training Centre at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. The centre houses a laparoscopic virtual reality trainer and dry lab facilities. Fellows are expected to be involved in current departmental research projects or collaborative research endeavours from their home institution. The fellowship is aimed at those ending or just having completed their basic Urology training.
