IDM Core Facilities Seminar: Illuminating Research: The IDM Microscopy Platform's Suite of Technologies and Collaborative Opportunities
Dr. Caron Jacobs is an accomplished Cell Biologist and Imaging Scientist within the IDM Microscopy Platform. She attained her PhD from University College London in 2018, where her research focused on employing super-resolution imaging techniques to explore viral-cell infection mechanisms. Following her doctoral studies, she returned to South Africa to engage in post-doctoral research at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM).
In 2021, she was the recipient of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) Scientist fellowship, recognising her efforts in advancing the democratisation of bioimaging for the investigation of infectious diseases and biomedical research across Africa. Her contributions entail work within the newly established IDM Microscopy Platform (IDM-µ) and research centring on the development of assays and advanced imaging techniques for studying host-pathogen interactions.
Furthermore, Dr. Jacobs collaborates with the Africa Microscopy Initiative (AMI) and is a co-founder of the African BioImaging Consortium (ABIC), established alongside African researchers in 2021, aimed at enhancing access to bioimaging resources, infrastructure, and education continent-wide.
