In Memoriam - Dr. Richard Raine
Dear Staff and Student Colleagues
Dr Richard “Ricky” Raine passed away on 24 March 2026, a loss that will be deeply felt within the Division of Pulmonology, the Department of Medicine, and the wider medical community.
A longstanding and highly respected member of the Division of Pulmonology, Richard was an exceptional pulmonologist and a recognised authority in respiratory physiology. He played a pivotal role in shaping respiratory medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital, particularly through his work in lung function and exercise testing, where his expertise was especially valued. He was also central to the development of the sleep service within the respiratory clinic and made important contributions to the medical intensive care unit during its evolution from the former Respiratory ICU.
Richard was deeply committed to academic medicine and teaching. He strongly supported translational research within the Division of Pulmonology and played a key role in organising the annual UCT Pulmonary Update, helping sustain a culture of clinical excellence and continuous learning. Trainees and colleagues alike remember him as a clinician and teacher of exceptional calibre whose humility, precision, and generosity left a lasting impression.
Even during periods of personal illness, he remained devoted to the Division and continued to contribute selflessly and meaningfully. He was admired for an extraordinary work ethic, often quietly carrying responsibilities far beyond what was expected, never seeking recognition for his efforts.
As Professor Keertan Dheda reflected, “He was truly a man in the mould of Bongani — the saints, angels and divine beings that exist among us.”
We extend our sincere condolences to Dr Raine’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. He will be remembered with deep respect for his remarkable professional contributions, humility, integrity, and enduring kindness.
Rus Goed, Dr. Ricky
